Preventive Care and Community Involvement: Dr. Keng Jun Ni's Mission for Senior Health

Today's interview isn't with a senior but with a doctor who treats them. I had the great opportunity to learn from Dr. Keng Jun Ni from Hospital Seberang Jaya, a passionate geriatrician dedicated to improving the lives of elderly patients.

In her daily practice at an acute hospital, Dr. Keng encounters numerous elderly patients grappling with a variety of health issues. It's often a poignant scene, as many of these problems could be prevented with proper education and early screening. This reality fuels Dr. Keng's belief that our healthcare focus should shift toward prevention rather than waiting until it's too late.

However, the challenge she and her medical colleagues face is the overwhelming demand of acute care, which leaves little time for preventive measures. This situation highlights the critical need for community involvement in health education and early intervention efforts.

The SITI Network can play a pivotal role in this endeavor. By leveraging the power of Seniors Inspiring Through Involvement, senior leaders can disseminate essential health information and preventive strategies among their peers, creating a domino effect that reaches far and wide.

Senior health is a comprehensive field that extends beyond traditional health screenings. It encompasses self-care, mobility, safety, relationships, accommodation, finances, mental health, and overall well-being. Addressing these areas requires the collective effort of society, involving not just medical professionals but also allied health workers and senior community leaders.

As the saying goes, "It takes a village to raise a child." The same holds true for supporting our seniors. By working together, we can create a supportive environment that promotes the health and well-being of our elderly population.

Dr. Keng will be sharing her insights on dementia care at Penang Dementia Awareness Day 2024 on August 17th at Spice. This public talk promises to be an invaluable opportunity for caregivers and community members to learn more about dementia and how to better care for those affected by it.
