Simon Chan, a retired schoolteacher, has transformed his post-retirement years into a mission to keep the community active and socially connected.

At 60, he discovered the joy of Zumba and fitness, leading him to co-found the Healthy Workout group six years ago. The group encourages seniors and retirees to exercise, socialize, and combat loneliness.

With regular classes in Penang, Simon’s sessions are more than just workouts—they are lively gatherings that promote physical and mental health.

As the group continues to grow, Simon envisions expanding its reach, making it easier for seniors to stay active, meet new people, and enjoy their retirement years with purpose and joy.

Simon Chan: Building a Vibrant Community Through Healthy Workout

Ten years ago, Simon Chan retired from his role as a dedicated, strict schoolteacher, beloved by many of his students. At 66, his transition to retirement wasn't marked by slowing down but rather by a new passion: fitness. Now, as a licensed Zumba instructor and co-founder of the Healthy Workout group, Simon has transformed his retirement years into a mission to keep the community active, healthy, and socially connected.

Building the Healthy Workout Community

After discovering the joy of Zumba and exercising at the gym, Simon realized that staying active was not just about fitness; it was about building community. Six years ago, alongside his friend Kevin, he launched Healthy Workout with the goal of encouraging seniors and retirees to come out of their homes, get moving, and socialize. The group started just before the COVID-19 era and has since grown into a vibrant network of people who look out for one another and lift each other’s spirits.

“We want seniors and retirees to come out and exercise, mix with people,” Simon says. “This improves their mood and health, and it’s free for everyone who joins.”

Beyond Classes: Trips, Charity, and Togetherness

With classes held multiple times a week in venues like Youth Park and Balai Rakyat Pulau Tikus, Simon’s sessions are more than just workouts; they are gatherings filled with laughter, friendship, and mutual support. The Healthy Workout group goes beyond Zumba classes, as members often go on trips together, participate in charity work, and help each other out in times of need.

 

Simon’s passion for Zumba, combined with his commitment to community, has created an environment where seniors find companionship and fun, alleviating the loneliness that many retirees face.

"Many of our members have built close friendships here," he explains. "The exercise keeps them physically healthy, but the connection, the laughter, and the togetherness—they keep everyone mentally healthy too."

Simon’s Vision for a Healthy, Happy Senior Community

In his role as a Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN) member, Simon leads classes with enthusiasm, getting his own workout in while helping others find the joy of movement. "It's rewarding to see everyone staying happy and healthy. I get to exercise too, and it’s something we all look forward to each week,” he says with a smile.

As the group continues to grow, Simon envisions expanding Healthy Workout to include more venues with sheltered spaces, particularly around the Pulau Tikus area, where rain won’t disrupt the activities. “We need a venue with a roof, like the stage at Youth Park, to keep the classes going smoothly,” he says, hoping for support from the community.

With his infectious energy and dedication, Simon has built more than just a fitness class—he's cultivated a family. For those who join, the benefits are clear: improved physical health, a sense of belonging, and a community that makes retirement years not just fulfilling but joyful.
