The Legacy of Mentorship and Education
Beyond his impressive research portfolio, Prof. Yuen’s impact as an educator is equally significant. Over the years, he has mentored and guided over 70 postgraduate students at the master’s and Ph.D levels, who have gone on to establish successful careers in the pharmaceutical industry. His former students are highly sought after, and Prof. Yuen takes pride in making referrals to help them find opportunities, often staying in touch to follow their professional development.

“As an educator, one of the most rewarding experiences is seeing my students excel,” Prof. Yuen shares.

“Their success is like watching your own children grow. It’s a lifelong commitment to ensure they do well.

Four of my former Ph.D students have become full professors, at Oxford, Monash and Nottingham universities with one locally. ”

His dedication to his students extends beyond the classroom. He actively catches up with them to see their progress and offers guidance whenever needed. This personal connection with his students reflects his belief that teaching is not just a profession—it’s a lifelong responsibility to nurture talent and support the next generation.

A Balance Between Work and Play
While his professional life keeps him busy, Prof. Yuen also ensures a balance between work and leisure. In his free time, he indulges in his love for photography and drone exploration, combining his interests in technology and creativity. “I enjoy using my camera and drone to capture the world around me,” he says, finding joy in moments of creativity outside the lab. These hobbies allow him to unwind and explore new ways of seeing the world.

His passion for learning extends beyond his professional interests. Prof. Yuen remains active in seeking new research opportunities, collaborating with fellow scientists, and attending global conferences to stay updated on the latest advancements in health and pharmacology. His dedication to lifelong learning keeps him energized and motivated.

Staying Young in Spirit
For Prof. Yuen, staying active is not just a matter of physical movement but a mindset. He firmly believes that retirees should stay curious and remain engaged, both mentally and physically. “The transition from working full-time to staying at home during retirement can be daunting,” he admits, but adds that with the right mindset, retirement can be incredibly fulfilling.

He credits much of his positive outlook to the support of his spouse. “Support from your spouse is important, especially when you first retire. Having something to look forward to daily, whether it’s work, hobbies, or even meeting friends for a meal, is crucial to keeping the mind and heart active,” he advises.

Prof. Yuen encourages retirees to embrace their passions and use their experience to contribute meaningfully to society. “The pursuit of new knowledge and staying active in one’s passion can lead to rewarding experiences,” he adds. His advice to retirees is simple yet powerful: stay curious, remain open to learning, and don’t be afraid to start new initiatives.

Looking to the Future: Expanding Research and Mentorship
As for his future plans, Prof. Yuen remains committed to expanding his research into tocotrienols, exploring new health benefits and ensuring his findings are translated into widespread clinical practice and make an even greater impact in public health.

But his passion for research is not his only focus. Prof. Yuen hopes to continue mentoring his students, helping them navigate their careers and ensuring they thrive in their respective fields. “To me, having students is like having children,” he reflects. “It’s a lifelong commitment.  I want to see them do well, and I’ll always be there to support them.”
