Her Story
Personal Background
Mdm Cheah Moey Yin started learning sewing at the age of 30 from the famed teacher Geok Siew, while helping out at her late father's clothing shop. She can sew many types of clothes, including cheongsam. After a while, she paused her sewing journey to take care of her young children. Subsequently, she worked in administration at a nearby school before retiring.
Interests and Activities
In addition to her sewing skills, Mdm Cheah has deep interests in baking, cooking, making Nyonya kuih, Chinese brush painting, and yoga. She believes that maintaining her skills allows her to contribute to the community and keep herself occupied, preventing loneliness and a wandering mind.
Community Involvement
Mdm Cheah teaches yoga twice a week in the evenings for members of the Penang Swimming Club. She attends Chinese brush painting classes once a week and helps as a committee member of the Penang Chinese Brush Painting Society to organize art exhibitions a few times a year to raise funds by selling art pieces. At the end of this year, she will join her society in an exhibition in Shenzen, something she eagerly looks forward to.
At her yoga society, she assists with any programs organized by her master. She also teaches at Memory Cafe occasionally and prepares tea breaks for the participants.
Goals and Aspirations
Mdm Cheah aims to raise funds for charity, keep seniors active through her programs, and serve as a role model to encourage other seniors. She is passionate about cooking, making kuih, yoga, and Chinese brush paintings. From her years of experience taking care of her husband, a stroke patient, she shares her knowledge on encouraging stroke patients to think positively and exercise for recovery.
Memorable Experiences
In 2019, Mdm Cheah organized a huge food fair for her yoga center, Ananda Maya Yoga Centre, raising over a hundred thousand ringgit for charity. The event was a success, despite the stress and numerous coordinations required.

Mdm Cheah enjoys making friends, getting to know people, and doing charity work. She encourages seniors to stay active and engaged, advocating for lifelong learning through her classes and setting an example for them. She believes in mixing with people of different age groups and participating in various programs and activities.

Mdm Cheah emphasizes the importance of staying busy and active. She advises seniors to step out of their homes, engage with others, and gain a broader perspective. She is willing to teach her skills in workshops and take apprenticeship classes.
